If you've got a working-bred dog, chances are they've got instincts that have been deliberately bred into them for generations. Your Springer or cocker wants to sniff and flush. Your Labrador wants to retrieve. Your Collie wants to control movement. Your Terrier wants to chase, dig and investigate. And then we bring them into our homes and sometimes expect them to switch all of that off because it's inconvenient for us. But what if the answer isn't to fight those instincts? What if we learnt to work with them? That doesn't mean allowing your dog to do whatever they want. It means understanding why they do what they do and finding appropriate ways to channel those natural behaviours. 🦆 Teach the hunting dog how to search. 👃 Give the sniffy dog opportunities to use their nose. 🎾 Give the retriever appropriate outlets for carrying and retrieving. 🐕‍🦺 Teach the high-drive dog how to work with you. 🎯 Build recall and impulse control around the things that naturally motivate them. Because a dog who has an outlet for their instincts can be very different from a dog who is constantly being told: “No. Don't do that. Stop. Leave it. Don't sniff. Don't chase. Don't run.” Training isn't about creating a completely different dog. It's about teaching the dog you've got how to successfully live in the world you've asked them to live in. And sometimes, the behaviour you're trying desperately to stop is actually telling you something about what your dog needs. So instead of asking: “How do I stop my dog doing this?” Try asking: “Why does my dog want to do this — and how can I give them an appropriate way to do it?” That's where the really interesting training begins. 💙💜 Stop fighting the dog you've got.
