Back to normality

by Laura Sinfield | Jan 5, 2026 | Core Training Principles, Obedience & Everyday Skills

I hope everyone has had the most wonderful time over Christmas. Dog training can be the last thing on your mind over the festive period due to the family chaos but you can get back to it quick enough.

If your house has finally gone quiet, the decorations are coming down, and you’re wondering “Why does my dog feel like a completely different animal?” — you’re not alone.

The festive period is brilliant… but for dogs, it often means weeks of broken routines. Late nights, extra visitors, more food than usual, fewer walks, skipped training sessions and a whole lot of excitement. Even the most settled dogs can struggle when normal life suddenly resumes.

So if January feels a bit… bleurgh, let’s talk about it.

Why dogs struggle after the holidays

Dogs thrive on predictability and routine. During the festive period, their world changes:

  • Walk times shift (or disappear altogether)
  • Boundaries get relaxed (“just this once…”)
  • Visitors come and go
  • Training takes a back seat
  • They get more attention one minute… and less the next

When routine returns almost overnight, dogs don’t always bounce back as quickly as we hope.

You might be noticing:

  • Increased pulling on the lead
  • Slower or selective recall
  • Jumping up, over-excitement or frustration
  • Struggling to settle at home
  • A dog who suddenly seems “naughty” again

Sound familiar?

It’s not bad behaviour — it’s adjustment

This isn’t your dog being difficult. It’s your dog saying “Hang on… the rules changed again.”

And this is where gentle restructure really helps.

Small, consistent habits — the same walk routes, clear expectations, calm handling and a bit of focused training — can quickly rebuild confidence and clarity for your dog (and sanity for you).

Questions to reflect on 👀

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • Has my dog’s routine actually gone back to normal yet?
  • Am I expecting too much, too quickly?
  • Are there behaviours I’ve been “putting up with” that I don’t really want long-term?
  • If nothing changed, would I be happy with this in six months’ time?

If the answer is no, that’s not a failure — it’s information.

January is a brilliant time to reset

This time of year is perfect for:

  • Re-establishing calm, clear boundaries
  • Polishing foundations like loose lead walking and recall
  • Building better focus around distractions
  • Helping your dog settle more easily at home and outdoors

Even just a few well-planned sessions can make a huge difference.

Thinking about some support?

If you’ve been considering training for a while, ask yourself:

  • What would daily life look like if things felt easier?
  • How much more enjoyable would walks be with less stress?
  • What could your dog achieve with the right guidance?

If you’re ready to reset after the festive chaos, now is the time to book in and start fresh — before habits settle in again.

✨ Your dog doesn’t need perfection. They need clarity, consistency and support.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
